曾获卫生部有突出贡献中青年专家称号，享受国务院特殊津贴专家，中央保健委员会特聘专家，中山大学附属第六医院首任院长、荣誉院长。
从事普通外科的临床诊治40余年，在结直肠肿瘤、炎症性肠病及肛门良性疾病等方面有着极丰富的临床经验，是推动我国结直肠肛门外科学科发展的学科带头人之一。在国内较早开展腹腔镜结直肠癌根治术并带动学科的年轻医生熟练掌握了腔镜技术。尤其善于处理结直肠外科疑难病例，如超低位直肠癌保功能手术、局部复发性直肠癌的外科处理、腹膜后肿瘤、直肠肛门间质瘤、克罗恩病的手术治疗、回肠储袋手术等。

Recognized as one of the leading figures in advancing the field of colorectal and anal surgery in China. Pioneered laparoscopic radical resection for colorectal cancer in China and mentored young surgeons in mastering laparoscopic techniques. Particularly skilled in managing complex colorectal cases, including functional preservation surgery for ultra-low rectal cancer, surgical treatment of locally recurrent rectal cancer, retroperitoneal tumors, rectal and anal stromal tumors, surgical management of Crohn's disease, and ileal pouch surgery.
